Where has the classical music gone?

If you read about music history, you know that classical music used to be "popular" music, as in music actually patronized by people.  But what is the modern analog?

Steven of Flos Carmeli suggests that movie music has replaced formal classical music as the classical music of our time.  What interesting idea - I never thought about it that way.
