Isabel pointed out something to me in the flurry of Drudge links regarding General Pace's comments regarding certain behavior. Here is what Pace said:
I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts.
Here was a response from the Republican Senator John Warner:
I respectfully but strongly disagree with the chairman's view that homosexuality is immoral.
Indeed, as Isabel noted, Drudge even took Warner's quote for a headline today. But Pace's quote, as presented, wasn't that homosexuality is immoral, but that homosexual acts were immoral. He also compared homosexual acts to adultery, which is also apparently against military rules.
Personally, I applaud Pace for not retracting his statement in his apology. Instead, he said:
In expressing my support for the current policy, I also offered some personal opinions about moral conduct...I should have focused more on my support of the policy and less on my personal moral views.
I'm sure that gay rights advocates will continue to complain about his statement, but the general deserves credit for sticking to his guns...so to speak. Hopefully, this will eventually help people to understand that the immorality resides in particular sexual activity, not in the very being of the person who identifies himself or herself as homosexual.
