Just read an article at MSN of all places on a study measuring the effect of Down Syndrome on happiness.
It turns out that the vast majority of families including a member with Down Syndrome report being happier because of that member. 79% in fact. We can't even get that percentage of people to agree on how to save our economy.
And i have to give the article credit for pointing out that
Thousands of women a year opt to terminate pregnancies when their unborn child has Down syndrome. Some estimates put that number as high as 90 percent
According to the article, only about 6000 persons with Down Syndrome are allowed to be born each year in our country.
The rest, parents refuse...and yet, as the study indicates, these people might actually be rejecting the very person who would bring them the most happiness in life.
Abortion, that great freedom and right which allows people to live their lives according to their own plans (assuming of course that something else that they hadn't anticipated doesn't intervene)...might actually yield a less happy life than the life they didn't plan on.
Who would have guessed it? Who could possibly be prescient enough to know what's best for us in the future?
I wonder...
